Journal #3: The Social (Media) Revolution

In "Engaging Youth in Social Media: Is Facebook the New Media Frontier?" Greenhow and Reifman conduct a study to see if young people would use a space like Facebook to critically engage in news reading and translate this involvement into real-world actions. Do you find using online sites, such as Facebook or Twitter, to be an effective way for organizing social or political movementsWhat do these sites afford that non-digital communications don't?  Have you ever or would you likely join an online social or political action group in the future?

  1. I find social media websites very effective for organizing events. These sites allow you to write out all the information you could need such as time, date, occasion, driving instructions etc. conveniently on your phone or computer. The information is also sent out instantly instead of waiting a couple days for an actual paper invite. My senior year of high school, Facebook was used as my friends main way of setting up events such as our prom after party or spring break plans. So yes I would consider joining an online group because it allows effective and fast communication.

  2. I believe that using online sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to be an effective way to organize social and political movements. These online sites are quickly accessible on a persons phone making it easier to receive information instantaneously. As soon as an idea comes to mind a person can send it out to the public and get a million views. Personally, I have sports updates and certain news updates sent to my phone. I enjoy the feature of being able to filter what news gets sent to my phone because I can easily stay updated in what I am interested in. These notifications keep me informed the moment in which information is released rather than waiting to read it in the newspaper a day later. Overall, I tend to get most of my information and news online because it is conveniently at my fingertips.

  3. In this day and age, using online social media to organize social and political movements are very common and effective. It allows users to update and share information as they please whenever they want, which helps organize other followers in the process. Unlike other communication sources like newspapers and magazines, online and mobile social media spreads news much faster and gives the opportunity for its users to also share their opinions to other users. As this trend is only going to continue to grow in the future, it's going to be hard not to join a political or social movement online. But even if it doesn't become popular for the masses, I'll still join a movement if I feel the need to share my opinions.

  4. I believe that one of the most effective ways to get vital information out to a mass group of people would be through a social media site. Today if you walk around our campus almost everyone that is around you is hold or looking at their cell phone. Their cell phone within a touch of a button can open up twitter or facebook. When in an organization someone can post something and immediately another person can respond sharing their thoughts, creative a fast effective way for communication. I would join a group on social media in the future because I believe it is the most effective way to get the word out.

  5. I definitely think that using online sites such as facebook and twitter are an effective way of planning any sort of event. When you think about it, if you send out an invitation of some sort through the mail on a piece of paper, it could take days or even a week to reach you depending on where you are, but with the use of computers and cell phones today, people are able to be reached in a mere second. I know that if I get an invitation on facebook, it's incredibly convenient seeing as how there's the date, time, option for "attending" or "not attending," etc. There's been so many times where I've heard about things through the use of these online sites, so I know that if anyone were to make an outreach through one of them, it would be extremely successful, just because everyones always using technology these days. I think that I would join a group on social media in the future due to how easy it is to get the word across these days.

  6. Social media is an excellent tool for organizing social or political events. Digital organization of events via social media offers an advantage that non-digital means of organizing do not, and that would be the ability to send an update or notification to a person's cell phone that is likely with them at all times. I would certainly join an online political or social group. I have been in various social groups and they are an excellent way of keeping ideas or opinions collected for a certain group of people to see and participate in. Social media is an excellent mean to an end.

  7. I believe social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are very effective ways for organizing social or political movements. These websites allow people to quickly get out information to whomever they wish without having to take the time of sending it out in the mail. People can also change dates and times very quickly unlike doing it through the mail, which can take up to days. I would definitely join an online political or social group. Throughout my experiences with social groups, I find them very effective ways to get information to individuals.

  8. Yes, I do believe social media are effective ways for organizing social or political movements. It's so easy to connect with an immense amount of people over Facebook and being able to just press a button and forward it to more people. Someone can send something to you, you can send it to someone else, and the chain keeps growing. Non-digitally, things move much slower and less people are able to receive messages or announcements. Personally, I wouldn't want to join an online social group just because I don't know those people in real life and do not feel comfortable with that.

  9. Social media sites are already a prominent way groups, organizations, and companies keep each other and the people who are following them updated on what is going on. I think that using these sites for news with the goal of organizing movements is possibly the most effective way to get people to do it. Especially if the target is the youth. These sites are already extremely popular and frequently visited. Also, youth will probably be more likely to be open minded on social media sites than they would be if they were watching a program on politics. I would definitely join a political group on any social media site because it would be so easy to keep updated on what is going on.

  10. Using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are an extremely effective way to organize social and political movements. They provide the ability to share everyone’s comments and opinions are so instantaneous, while other forms of communication can take days to publish information. It’s easier to keep up with such movements when they’re posted on social media because our generation constantly checks the sites for social purposes anyway. Another plus to using social media sites for political movements is that it is free! Printing flyers and other non-digital communications can be costly. I have used online sites to join both social and political action groups before and they have proven to be very effective.

  11. With technology's advancements, everything is becoming more digital. We are starting to rely more on social networks for information than physical interaction. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter allow us to gain and contribute information to the public easier and more efficiently. I am not the type of person to go out of my way to research political discussions, but when people post information on these sites it intrigues me to look into them. These digital sites give us all the information right at our finger tips without having to put too much work into it unlike what you would have to go through to do it manually. People are able to communicate through these sites easier than they could in person so it is more of a luxury feature to have. Having the ability to gain knowledge easier, I would consider joining an online political group just because I would be able to come and go as I please without having to deal with commitment.

  12. I find social media such as Facebook and Twitter to be extremely successful when trying to organize political or social movements. If one person decides to share a page that is promoting a political or social group then they are letting every person on their friends list know that they support that movement. The thing is that each person has a different group of friends so once four people share it then that is possible that thousands of people have seen that you support that movement. The difference between social media and other digital advertising is the fact that you can’t tell if one of your close friends also agrees with that idea. I have never had an interest to join a social or political group.

  13. Social media can be useful in reaching millions of people in a short period of time. It's like any other news source, except social media allows anyone with internet access to speak his mind, many times anonymously. This can be extremely dangerous, as people with poor intentions can reach the masses easily, and the masses will generally trust what is being published. Traditional news sources are scrutinized heavily, making it more difficult to publish false information or that from questionable sources. I believe that people, especially older folks who haven't grown up in the era of social networking, are unaccustomed to differentiating important, trustworthy sources from questionable ones. This makes social media a dangerous, but effective tool for social and political groups to organize.

  14. Social media is an extremely effective way of organizing practically anything, whether it is political or not. I would definitely join a group online. Mainly because all updates are almost instantaneous. If there is an event or an update on the information, one can access it right away, instead of having to wait for mail or even for it to be put on television. By using Twitter or Facebook, one can not only see the standing of the political organization, but look into the people who follow it as well. Almost everyone today is attached to either their cellphones or laptops Technology has become such a prominent factor in life that newspapers and magazines are almost things of the past.

  15. Yes I do find that using social media to be a good way to organize information. The reason for this is a lot of people use it. Also, because of this it makes it very easy to get a hold of people compared to another way of using information to organize things. Also, on things like face book you can just create a group message and put everyone you need to communicate with in it. Technology is extremely prevelant in every bodies lives. This makes it very easy to get ahold of everyone. Also things like groups in twitter Facebook make it easy to make sure everyone knows what is going on compared to another way of doing things like sending a letter

  17. 74% of internet users use social media. This high percentage of users is a guarantee that users have seen at least one piece of related news on their social media feed. I have personally seen or heard of news/events on social media before I realized it was on the news on the television or in the paper. The ability to use the internet and social media sites are sometimes better than non-digital communications because you have it at your fingertips and instantly. I personally sometimes find it bothersome when people talk about politics or their opinions on major topics on Twitter but then again, social media is where people can speak their mind and where others can comment and react back to what people have said. I know students from the high school I've graduated from that are very into political blog sites, especially in the south, where politics and news-related topics are a big topic in this area.

  18. I think that online sites are very convenient and easy to use. If someone wants to invite a large group of friends to a social event then the easiest way would be to invite them through the use of a social media site such as Facebook. You can add a large amount of people to a page and they in turn can invite more people for you. This can be a very effective method of gathering a bunch of people for something like a political rally. It is much faster than a verbal or hand written invitation and because of this convenience I think that I can see myself joining an online social group in the future.

  19. I believe that social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter are very effective ways of organizing social or political movements. I believe this because these websites are where many people spend a lot of their time reading the constantly updated information provided on them. I believe that these websites provide quick and direct information that other forms of information, like the newspaper for example. A social or political movement can post certain posts that can spark reader’s interest in a more convenient way for the reader to receive in comparison to a non-digital communication system. I believe that if I were on social media like Facebook or Twitter and I were to stumble upon a social or political that affectively sparked my interest, I would give it the chance of clicking on it and reading into it and if I were to support the cause that was being discussed than I would join in the effort.

  20. I do believe that social media creates an efficient way for information to be shared with the masses and and an effective way to organize large events. I believe that it is a good tool to use but I believe that people are placing way to much emphasis on social media and unintentionally abusing the driving force behind political and social movements. Passion is what pushes movements and passion grows from people banning together empathizing with one another and standing up for a singular idea. People are using social media as their rallying method is ineffective. It is hard to get someone to understand the problem and join the fight while they sit behind the shelter of a screen.
