What is your relationship with writing?
Some possible questions to answer: How often do you write? Why do you write? What kind of writing do you enjoy doing? Do you like writing? Do you consider yourself a writer?

  1. My relationship with writing occurs mostly when I have to write an assignment for a class. I do not write often I only write about once or twice a month to complete an assignment. The writing that I enjoy the most is when it is creative writing and I can make up a story, develop new characters, and an interesting setting. I do not really like writing that much, I only do it when it is necessary and usually avoid doing it. I do not consider my self a writer because I do not find much enjoyment out of it however I do think of my self as a confident writer.

  2. In general, I see writing as something you have to do while in school or at work. Through most of high school, I wrote mainly because there was an assignment due in a certain class that required a basic story line, paragraphs, words, etc. Looking back at the last four years of my life, I never wrote something just because it was fun or exciting to me. I wrote to get something done. Because of this, I rarely would consider myself a writer. It's a great skill to have and I strive to make myself better at writing, but at the same time, it's something that's somewhat daunting.

  3. Almost all of my writing has been because of class requirements, but I do try to write for the sake of improving my writing abilities from time to time. I enjoy writing as long as it pertains to something I enjoy or feel passionate about. The writing I enjoy most is expository; I enjoy this kind of writing most only because I feel this is the kind of writing I am best at. I also enjoy free writes or creative writing. I consider myself a write because I enjoy writing. Writing is a great form of expression and it's always possible to make yourself a better writer which is why I enjoy it.

  4. My relationship with writing has mostly entailed assignments that I’ve been asked to do in high school or college. Although my writing is mostly done in school, I still enjoy it for the most part. If I’m not to like an assignment, it’s usually because I’ve been given a boring topic or something that I’m not very interested in. So far in college though, the essays that I’ve been assigned have been quite interesting and I’ve been able to relate them to certain aspects of my life. I don’t really consider myself a writer, but when I do have to write for a class, it’s never a burden. I like writing from personal experience because it’s make the paper more meaningful, but also gives the reader a better sense of who I am.

  5. I am one of the most inarticulate people I know, and consequently I don’t enjoy writing. It’s not that I’m bad at writing, I actually think I’m pretty decent, but most of the time it’s a pain to try to find the right words. So, If I had to put a title to my relationship with writing I suppose it would belong somewhere under the “it’s complicated” category. That being said, I do realize how important it is to be able to write effectively and to be able to get others to understand what it is you’re thinking. Most of the time though, I just don’t want to do it.

  6. I do not always enjoy writing but I understand that it is essential for developing thoughts and communicating. For me, the trouble comes from finding the right words for a description or controlling my thoughts into one direction instead of including a million tangents. I also have trouble motivating myself to actually sit down and start writing because I am definitely not an English major and much rather be solving math problems.
However, I realize that developing your writing skills is important because it helps you form persuasive arguments. Even though writing long, extensive papers about subjects I do not care about is not my favorite, I know that it will help me later in life.

  7. I write about as often as any other college student (when I need to), but when I do write I enjoy it very much. Even as a child I loved writing so much that I would tell people that I wanted to be an author when I grow up. I mostly like to do creative writing where I don’t have to follow too many requirements and I am free to just write about anything. I like to make up elaborate stories about ridiculous things just because it’s entertaining for me. Although I don’t write for fun, I still love to do it and hope that my future career will involve some sort of writing.

  8. Writing is critical to many aspects of my life. Whether I'm writing a professional email, a letter to family, or just texting my friends, the ability to choose my words carefully is essential to successful communication. Rather than to gather enjoyment, I use my knowledge and skill at writing as a tool to communicate in a succinct and efficient manner. I think about writing all of the time, but I am not one to write stories, poetry, or fiction. This kind of writing for entertainment just doesn't give me a thrill, so most of what I write, discounting texting, email, and your typical thank-you note, is for academic purposes.

  9. I have never really thought about writing outside of the mandatory assignments given to me by teachers. I don't really enjoy to write but it is a necessary skill in life. If I had to choose my favorite type of writing it would be narratives since there are many different creative ways to write it. I have never considered myself a writer because I don't think that I am creative enough to be a writer and find little enjoyment from the activity. Due to my lack of motivation I find that I don't go very in depth with my writing assignments and just o enough to get me the grade I am OK with.

  10. For the most part, my relationship with writing usually consists of school assignments. I write papers frequently for the different courses I take. I enjoy writing narrative papers the most because I believe that it is what I am best at. I feel that I can be the most descriptive when I write about real-life experiences and connect the most with the readers of my paper. Although I usually only write for class assignments and not for fun, I do like writing. I do not consider myself a writer, only because it is not something that I do in my free time.

  11. I generally feel very nonchalant towards writing. It has never been something I enjoyed doing, but I understand how important it will be as a future corporate lawyer. I write as often as I am told to do so. Looking back at high school and even the two semesters prior to this one, I never wrote because I simply wanted to write. It was always something required, such as a paper on a random book, or even a lab report for Chemistry. Given my indifference to writing itself, I would not consider myself a writer. Writing just isn’t something I would do on my free time, it will always be nothing more than an assignment.

  12. Typically when I am writing it is for a school assignment or project. Very rarely do I write for personal enjoyment because personally I do not find pleasure in writing. I believe this is due to the process being very slow and requiring a lot of patience. Although, there are times where I find certain topics to write about that I have particular interest in to the extent where I am motivated to write my opinions and thoughts down about it. The only times that I do not find enjoyment in writing is when it is on topics that I do not have interest in.

  13. I personally do not consider myself a writer. I love English and reading but when it comes to writing I find it hard to start an essay or paper. Throughout high school I was in Honors English and eventually AP Literature which I genuinely enjoyed but writing was never my strong suit. Once I get going on a paper that I like and can relate to the subject of, it doesn't take me long to finish it. However, I find that I have issues with grammar and making the paper the best it can be, usually needing an experts advice on how to improve and stay on topic as much as possible. Writing is only something I do when a teacher assigns it as a grade, I suppose I'm not for it or against it, just not something I do for fun.

  14. My relationship with writing is solely based on school assignments I do not enjoy it, or get any inspiration from writing. The only writing that entertains me a little is writing about sports but writing fiction or research papers is where I really started to dislike writing when that came about in like 10th grade. Ever sense then I have fully against writing and would definitely not call myself a writer and a minimal reader more of a watcher. I don't enjoy writing because of all the extra details in papers, I like to get a point across and be done and not add the extra details because that's what makes writing tedious.

  15. I would not consider myself a writer nor do I enjoy doing it. My experience with writing has been based off of assignments, not for my personal interest. I wouldn’t say that I hate writing, I just see it as time-consuming and tend to lose interest. I would rather talk about something than to type a story because to me, hearing something being said to you is better than just reading it. Despite that, there are some things I like to write down and elaborate on that don’t come up in the usual conversation. When I am required to write, the quality is usually based off my interest in topic.

  16. My relationship with writing is complicated. While I do enjoy writing, it’s ninety-eight percent of the time for school related work. Therefore, I only really write when it’s required of me. I enjoy writing because I like to express myself. It’s a lot easier for me to babble on a page and fix it rather than keeping my thoughts inside my head or spewing my soul to someone. I’m an English major so I suppose I should consider myself some-sort of writer. Writing comes naturally to me so whether its research or analysis I don’t mind doing it. However, I’m not the biggest fan of fictional writing.

  17. My relationship with writing isn't a very strong one. I usually only write when I need to do an assignment for school. I've never written any sort of book or poem in my free time. However, writing is not something I have anything against, if I like the prompt or topic that I am writing on it can be relatively enjoyable. I don't consider myself a writer in any way, but I would consider myself decent at writing. I tend to like prompts when they are more personal and I can write freely, not something like a book report. That's basically my relationship with writing in a nutshell.

  18. My relationship with writing is exceptionally weak. I absolutely don't like writing unless it is creative writing which at the most is okay. I do have a few papers which I haven't mind writing; however for the most part writing is not something that I enjoy. The only time that I ever write is when I have to for school because like I said above I hate writing. Also, I would probably not consider myself to be a write because well I hate writing unless it is for school. Writing is something however that is important as such I feel like it is a good skill to have because of this I try to write and do not mind learning and improving my writing because it is such critical skill in life.

  19. Most of my writing lately has been for academic assignments which makes me enjoy it less. Typically, I enjoy writing, however it depends on the topic. Persuasive topics are usually my favorite papers to write. It is easiest for me to write when I'm arguing a certain point. I used to write a lot more; it is more rare for me to write on my own time now because I've been writing so much more for classes. I am fond of writing because of the opportunity to express myself, however I hesitate to call myself a writer because I have not liked my writing recently.

  20. My relationship with writing is very straight forward. For many years, I would only write when it was necessary. For example, throughout the four years of high school, I would absolutely hate writing because it was only essay after essay after essay concerning things that I didn't know about or necessarily care about. But in reality, we write everyday. I'm writing right now. I write on my phone in a text message about 50,000 times a day, it is still writing. This past semester, I realized that I do enjoy to write. The aspect of writing is quite difficult though, and I don't like it enough to do it as a hobby. But I enjoyed writing "snapshot" papers and articles which are a couple of the writings I did this past semester. I have told others numerous times that I see myself as a reader rather than a writer. I would prefer to read a novel rather than write any day. I will leave the calling of writing for those who are a lot better at it than me.

  21. My favorite type of writing is journaling. It allows me to explore my thoughts and sift through my emotions. It helps to know that no will ever read it unless I allow them, so I can word vomit on the page all of my thoughts for the day and it really helps me think more clearly and grow my thoughts in a more positive direction. Writing for school on the other hand is a lot more stressful. You have the pressure of confining your thoughts to words for someone to look at and critique. Though with the unwanted pressure it does push your mind into becoming a stronger more critical one. So in hindsight I appreciate the critique but its hard for anyone to say they enjoy writing for school.
