The two advertisements featured above both feature the same product (body wash); however, each one employs a different strategy to appeal to audiences and sell the product. What are the differences between the two approaches? Which advertisement do you think is more effective? Why?
Although they both are advertising a similar product, they both have completely different approaches. The Axe body soap advertisement is more seductive and sexy, while the Old Spice advertisement is going for a more funny and comedic approach. In my opinion, I believe the old spice ad is more effective and appealing because it catches my attention instantly with the centaur. I also find it funnier and more laid back compared to most advertisements featured on television and in magazines.
ReplyDeleteThe two advertisements are mainly towards the male audience. The two body washes appeal to what they think would appeal the male viewers. The first advertisement appeals to the man because of the woman in the advertisement, giving it a sexual tone to the advertisement. The second advertisement appeals more to the comical side of men but also all viewers. Many viewers, including women, think that Old Spice are quite funny which makes them check out the products and eventually buy it for their husbands or sons, etc. I believe the Old Spice advertisement is more effective because it appeals to everyone, not just men even though it is a male product.
ReplyDeleteThe axe commercial appeals more towards the male gender, and it is sexually appealing to them. They make it look as if their product is used then people will become more sexually attractive. Both commercials are centered around false claims making it seem like if you use their product then you will become more attractive or manly. In the old spice commercial their approach is a little more comical, basically saying its two things like a combination of a man and horse. This appears cool and funny, but their commercial actually opens up to the male and female gender. This broadens their appeal to the product and may be a better way to go about advertising. The reason why is because more people become interested in their product and the women will buy the product for their significant other
ReplyDeleteThe two advertisements featured are both selling body wash; however, they use different strategies to sell the product. Axe tends to go with a more sexual approach. Selling to the senses of desire. Then, the Old Spice advertisement takes a more humorous approach on selling their product. This advertisement catches your eye more than the Axe ad because it is different than more. There are so many sexual ads out today that one does not tend to look twice at them. However, the Old Spice Ad will draw your attention because it is out of the norm. Even though sexual ads do tend to sell well, I think the Old Spice ad is more effective because the idea is different to the point where it will be remembered.
ReplyDeleteThe Axe advertisement has more of a sexual appeal by having a half naked male and female pouring their product on their bodies with a look of pleasure on their faces. The Old spice advertisement is more of a comedic ad because it features a man who is half man and half horse using their product. Personally I believe that the old spice advertisement is more effective because the use of comedy in an advertisement will cause your viewer to remember the ad because it made them laugh. When your viewer is shopping for body wash and see Old spice it will bring a smile to their face because they will remember the hilarious advertisement they saw which will in turn make them want to buy the product more. I believe the Axe advertisement is too serious ad viewers of a young age are just left confused because they do not understand the sexual appeal.
ReplyDeleteThough they are both selling the same product I they are taking two opposite approaches to appeal to the viewer. The axe taking a more sexual role implying that if you use their product you get to have sex with a beautiful girl. Its very obvious and playing on a very strong desire of men. As opposed to the other add used by old spice playing on humor to try and sell their product. I believe that the axe is more effective because its playing on a stronger desire when compared with humor.
ReplyDeleteAlthough these two ads are selling similar products, Axe chose to use sex appeal in its ad to grab the attention of the viewer, while Old Spice uses comedy in its ad to persuade the viewer to buy its product. I think the more effective advertisement is the Old Spice 2 in 1 body wash ad. The fact that a half man/ half horse creature is taking a shower is absurd, and this instantly draws the viewer in. The connection between this character and the duality of the product is obvious and powerful. This actually gives information about the product as opposed to the Axe ad, which draws a weak connection between smelling like body wash and getting lucky.
ReplyDeleteBoth Axe and Old Spice try to appeal to their costumers, specifically males. Both companies make sure their advertisements appear masculine with the use of dark colors, nothing “girly”, and models that are appealing to males (very masculine men and an attractive female). Axe’s approach is sexy and seductive. The implied message is that this body wash will make you have sex appeal. Old Spice takes a humorous approach, saying that their product can do two things not only with words but also with the image of a half man-half horse. I believe Old Spice’s advertisement is overall more effective. Even though the product is geared towards men, because the advertisement is funny it is able to appeal to all sexes.
ReplyDeleteEvery product has a different way of approaching how they want the public to respond to their advertisement. Axe promotes the sexual feature of their body wash while Old Spice shows more of a comical side to their approach. Both are convincing ways to influence the consumer in buying their product because everyone is interested in comedy and sex. Axe tries to show that by using their product you will be increasing your chance of engaging in sexual activity while Old Spice shows how using their product will wash away the animal-like stench men accrue throughout the day. Overall, I think that Axe's take on the advertisement will increase their sales because more men will be interested in buying a product that attracts the opposite sex.
ReplyDeleteBoth advertisements display similar products, the approaches on the other hand are completely different. Axe uses a more sexual approach. By trying to sell sex, they sell the product as well. Old Spice uses a more comical approach. Between the two, I believe Axe is more effective than Old Spice. The idea of sex is something that is biologically planted into our brains. Despite people's opinions of sex, good or bad, the thought it always there. American, as well as many other cultures, are obsessed with sex. The comical approach is not bad, but it is less likely to sell the product. Yes, it might be funny. But is it funny enough to buy? People's opinions on what is funny and wasn't differ more than those opinions about sex.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the two advertisements both display body washes, they're portrayed in two completely different ways. In the first ad for axe, it's clear that the audience is directed towards males. The use of the woman and the sexual atmosphere makes it more appealing to men. I guess it shows that if you use their product, you'll also attract women to do things like the woman in the ad. In the second ad, I guess it's still directed towards men, and it's setting a funnier tone to it's viewers. I feel like the axe ad will probably be the most effective just because guys will be most attracted to ads that involve anything involving women.
ReplyDeleteEach one of these commercials is trying to appeal to men by portraying some aspect of masculinity. Axe is trying to show a sexual fantasy to try and appeal to men by showing that they can dominate their sex life if they use their product. Old Spice is trying to appeal to men through humor, but also showing a pretty masculine guy using their product. The effectiveness lies within the individual viewing the advertisement. I find the Old Spice commercial to be more effective because I find it humorous, and I also know that they aren’t being serious with their spin on reality. I clearly won’t turn in to a centaur by using their product. However, the Axe commercial seems arrogant because using their product clearly doesn’t equate to a women showering herself in whip cream.
ReplyDeleteThe two advertisements use sex and comedy to appeal to audiences. Axe is trying to appeal to men in a way that is saying "if you use this product more women will want you" because of how good it smells. Men see these amazing looking men on the television with these beautiful women and think that they can be like that if they just use that product, which is exactly what Axe is getting at. Old Spice is appealing to men because of it's comedic effect and in my opinion whenever I see it in the store I think of the commercials and want to buy the product just for the laugh factor. I think the Old Spice ad is more affective because sometimes the Axe commercials can be overdone and end up looking stupid and as a woman if I saw a guy was wearing Axe I would think he was just trying to hard. With Old Spice they have just the right publicity to appeal to both men and women because of its comedic effect.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these ads play on different things that men want in their lives seeing as these ads are directed towards men. The axe ad implies that when you use ax you will get to be the dirty man, you will fufill the dream you always wanted of that girl and the whip cream that is in every movie ever seen. Where as the old spice one plays to the needs of being a manly man and to have legs like a horse and have a full beard, to be the man you always wanted to be. They play to both needs of men and are both very effective but i think the axe commercials will always be more effective because of every mans attraction towards women.
ReplyDeleteBoth of the advertisements are attempting to promote and sell a body wash, but they each use different methods of attracting their intended audiences. The intended audiences for these advertisements are men and they use different ways of gaining the interest of these men. The Axe advertisement used a strategy of provided the viewer with a seductive image in order to attract the interest of the viewer in a sexual way. The Old Spice advertisement uses a comedic approach by providing the viewer with a funny image to attract the viewers interest. I believe that the Axe advertisement is more effective because i believe that sexually attractive advertisements attract the interest of men better than comedy.
ReplyDeleteThe two advertisements use extremely different styles to appeal to their audiences. The first one for Axe body spray epitomizes the phrase “sex sells”. It is seductive and appeals to men with the idea that if they use Axe then they will get to hook up with women who look like the model. In contrast, the Old Spice advertisement takes a more comical approach to show the two components of their body wash. I think the Old Spice ad is more effective because it is so out of the ordinary it requires a second glance to interpret the picture. Comedy appeals to everyone, not just men like the crowd the Axe ad targets.
ReplyDeleteBoth of the ads are promoting body wash however, the way that they promote the product is completely different. The Axe ad uses sex to get their point across by saying that if you use this product you will have more luck with women. The Old Spice ad uses comedy by showing a centaur saying that their product is two things mixed together just like the centaur is. I think that the Old Spice commercial is more effective because both men and women can watch the commercial and laugh which gets them interested in the product whereas the Axe commercial is targeting men with their sexual implication.
ReplyDeleteThe Axe advertisement sells their body wash why appealing to the need for sex while the Old Spice advertisement uses the need for prominence to sell their product. Both appeal to logos, for the Old Spice ad it is logical for a viewer to want to use that product achieve prominence, and for the Axe ad it is logical for the viewer to use the body was to achieve sex ultimately. I personally think the Old Spice advertisement is more effective because it makes more sense than the Axe ad. I feel more likely to feel prominent as a result from smelling nice rather than feel like I am going to have sex from smelling nice.
ReplyDeleteOne important thing to note is that both of these products are extremely similar, and that both of these companies are competitors and with that in mind i will discuss the ads. The first ad is clearly appealing to males. The reason that is appealing to males is that the sex appeal is to males. it is a guy getting dirty not a woman. This means that it is targeted to males. However, because axes audience is not women this is ok i believe. the reason that this is ok is that it is a good ad. Also, the axe ad is kind of funny. The next add is the old spice one which just seems silly and odd compared to the axe ad.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the two advertisements are advertising body washes, they both have a completely different approach. I believe they are both directed towards the male audience but in different ways. The axe advertisement is shown as sexual and the old spice advertisement is shown to be funny. I think the old spice advertisement is more effective because it attracts more attention to viewers.
